A journey into the intimacy of one of Portugal’s most respected artists.
Multifaceted, prolific, one of the most sought-after (and counterfeit) artists at auctions, a proud citizen of Seixal and resident of Paris for six decades, Manuel Cargaleiro has remained the same as himself in his search for light, in his positive obsession with the harmony of colors with the desire to brighten the eyes of those who come into contact with his work. Starring the Master and with contributions that range from art historians to architects, from the Paris councilman of culture to his French gallerist, Ricardo Clara Couto and Luís Filipe Borges’ documentary is a journey into the intimacy of someone who says, “I am Manel and nothing more. I am there, in my work. I am me. And in any case, that is enough for me.
Manuel Cargaleiro was born in Vila Velha de Ródão on March 16, 1927, and it was during his childhood that he discovered the art of ceramics. In the early 1950s he began participating in shows and exhibitions in Portugal and it was in this decade that he received his first artistic awards. He studied in Italy and France and throughout his life he has participated in numerous collective and individual exhibitions all over the world. His work has been exhibited in cities like Geneva, Milan, Lausanne, Paris, Brasilia, Lisbon, Portalegre and Reims. In addition to ceramics, drawing and painting, Cargaleiro also dedicated himself, at the end of the twentieth century, to tapestry.
